Java History

This is probably a good time to cover pre–Java 1.0 history. James Gosling, the “father of Java,” created Java
in June 1991.He developed it as a programming language for controlling a variety of set-top boxes. The
variety of platform hardware required a language that was very portable. Java was originally named “Oak”
after a tree outside Gosling’s window. A trademark search found that name already in use, so it was renamed
“Java” in 1995. Java ME has essentially allowed Java to return to its roots!

Netscape adopted Java for its web browser in 1995, the same year as Java 1.0, which put Java on nearly
every PC.  James Gosling is still working for Sun as a VP and fellow and is still a very active member of the
Java community. Duke, the character in the image below, was an icon/pointing device used in one of the early
set-top box control systems. Duke has served as the unofficial and informal icon of Java. He remains the
beloved Java mascot today.
